The Story Behind H1 | The Veil Tore

The Veil Tore. The Graves Opened.

Some of the most startling imagery in Scripture is not found in a story meant to frighten us. It is found at the cross.

Matthew tells us that when Jesus cried out and yielded up His spirit, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook. The rocks split. The tombs were opened. Then, after Jesus’ resurrection, many of the saints who had fallen asleep came out of the tombs and appeared to many.

The veil mattered. For generations it had stood between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, a visible reminder that sinful humanity did not simply walk into the presence of a holy God. But when Jesus died, the veil did not wear out. It was not pulled apart by men. Matthew says it tore from top to bottom. God opened the way.

And then there are the graves.

Matthew 27:52 says the tombs were opened at Jesus’ death. Verse 53 tells us that the saints came out after His resurrection. Even in the darkness surrounding the crucifixion, Scripture was already pointing toward what was coming: death would not have the final word.

That is why this design belongs in our Seasonal collection. Around Halloween, our culture fills yards, stores, movies, and decorations with graves, darkness, fear, and death. This shirt uses some of that same dramatic imagery, but it tells an entirely different story.

The veil tore.
The graves opened.

Not because darkness won—but because Jesus did.

Someone may see the design and ask what it means. That is the door. Tell them about the veil. Tell them about the graves. Most of all, tell them about the Savior whose death opened the way to God and whose resurrection conquered the grave.

Read the story in Matthew 27:50–53.
