What Happens After You Close Your Bible?

You read the passage. You finish your coffee. You close your Bible.

Then what?

The day fills up quickly. Work, family, appointments, responsibilities. Before long, the words you read that morning can feel far removed from the life you’re living that afternoon.

But following Jesus connects those two things. What we learn in His Word should shape how we think, how we respond, and how we treat the people around us.

That’s the purpose behind our two four-month guided discipleship journals: Marked in His Image for men and The Next Step Journal for women.

Both grew from the same conviction behind 57 Ways to Sunday: faith should become visible in the way we live.

Who is the God who made you? What does it mean to bear His image? How should knowing Him shape the man you are becoming?

Marked in His Image explores those questions through four movements:

  • Marked — Who made me? Begin with the Maker, His character, and what it means to be created in His image and for His glory.
  • Formed — Who is He making me? Consider how God uses His Word, obedience, and trials to form Christlike character.
  • Made — What am I made for? Recognize work, relationships, stewardship, and responsibility as places to live out your faith.
  • Expected — What mark am I leaving on others? Turn your attention outward through pointing people to Christ, sharing His story, and investing in others.

The journey begins with the One whose image you bear and leads toward a life that helps others see Him.

You don’t need to see the entire road before taking the next faithful step.

The Next Step Journal builds on that encouragement through four movements:

  • Look to Him. Know the One you’re following.
  • Listen to Him. Learn to pay attention through time with God, His Word, and His people.
  • Take the Next Step. Respond in obedience to what He has shown you.
  • Live So Others Can See. Let your walk with Jesus shape the lives around you.

Its invitation is simple: open God’s Word, listen carefully, and follow through.

Two Journals, a Shared Purpose

The language and progression differ, but both journals help readers know God more deeply, understand life in relation to Him, respond to His work within them, and consider what He wants to do through them for others.

Each follows a rhythm of Scripture, reflection, prayer, and an intentional next step, six days a week. Sundays are left open for gathering with God’s people, worshiping, serving, and putting faith into practice.

Both also include “My Three”: space to identify people you will intentionally pray for and invest in.

These pages can support personal study or provide a starting point for conversations with a mentor or fellow believer. You don’t need polished answers, and missing a day doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

The goal is a life increasingly shaped by Christ.

So the next time you close your Bible, pause long enough to ask:

What is my next faithful step?
